How to provide support to people having surgery
People undergoing surgery will need support for all stages of care. If you’re supporting someone who is having surgery, it is important to know about preoperative patient care, the surgery process, and postoperative care for the prevention of surgical site infections. In partnership with Ontario Health, this
webinar will provide caregivers with information, resources, and tools to understand:
• The Ontario Health Quality Standard for Surgical Site Infections; what it is, why it has been developed, and how to use the patient guide to know what to ask for in your care.
• The role that health care providers play in collaboration with patients and their caregivers to prevent surgical site infections for people having surgery that requires an incision (a cut through the skin).
• Steps in determining the risk of getting a surgical site infection, and who to contact if there are concerns about wound healing.
• Empowering caregivers with questions to ask healthcare providers in advance of surgery.
Our Speakers:
• Megan Graham, a former surgical patient, who will share her lived experience
• Dr. Claudia Malic, current Vice-Chair of Quality and Patient Safety for the Department of Surgery, University of Ottawa
Who should attend? Caregivers who are supporting someone undergoing surgery, or anyone interested in learning more about preventing surgical site infections.
