Helping Caregivers Balance Work and Caregiving

Helping Caregivers Balance Work and Caregiving

Working caregivers. They are your colleagues or employees, juggling between job-related demands and caregiving responsibilities every day. They make up 35% of the Canadian workforce.

Almost half of caregivers have some degree of concern about losing their job due to their caregiving role

An estimated two thirds of Ontario’s 3.3 million caregivers are employed, fifty-three per cent of working caregivers admit the overall management of their caregiving responsibilities is stressful, and fifty per cent have seen a negative impact on their mental health. They worry about balancing their work and caregiver responsibilities, and many are afraid of losing their job. Caregivers asked for support navigating difficult conversations with their employer and raising awareness of the challenges they face.

The OCO, in collaboration with working caregivers and the Canadian Mental Health Association, responded by creating the Caregivers in the Workplace Toolkit to support both caregivers and employers during the return to work phase of COVID-19. The toolkit includes information guides, e-learning and videos.

With these resources in place, caregivers have options and strategies to help balance work and their caregiving responsibilities. At the same time, employers can use this toolkit to support a caregiver-friendly culture in the workplace.
