Meet our Speaker: Carol Skillen, CPA
Graduated from St. Mary’s University (Halifax) with a Bachelor of Commerce and promptly started working as an auditor travelling across Canada and northern US for a couple of years.
Got tired of all the driving and landed a job as an auditor with Customs and Excise (which ended up being the Canada Revenue Agency after many growing pains). Stayed in audit for 25 years steadily working on larger and larger files and eventually became an audit team leader. For the last five years of my CRA life I was a manager in GST/HST Rulings. In 1991, while with CRA I obtained my CGA (now CPA) designation.
A proud volunteer in some capacity, mainly in sports coaching Paralympic athletes for about 12 years and then moved over to Special Olympics in 2001. Since retiring in March 2018 she have stepped up her volunteering and added helping out at various festivals around town and presenting these financial literacy sessions at various locations. She had presented around 20 different sessions over the last year and do them because she believes that : “everyone should possess the set of skills and knowledge that allows them to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources”. Or at least have enough knowledge to know when they should ask more questions! “
